Vienna's 80th Halloween Parade Runs on a Ten-Hour Clock

The Town of Vienna lists the 80th Halloween Parade for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, along Maple Avenue from Branch Road to Center Street, rain or shine. The parade has run since 1946, and the Town now holds it on the Wednesday before Halloween.

The 7 p.m. start time is the smallest part of the day. The first street closes at 1 p.m., and the last ones reopen around 11 p.m. If you drive Maple for school pickup, run errands at the shops along it, or park near Church Street on a weekday, the parade affects you about six hours before the first float moves.

The Closure Schedule, Hour by Hour

The Town's parade page and road closure list sets out the timing in stages.

Time What closes When it reopens
1 p.m. Mill Street from Church Street NE to Maple Avenue E After the parade
2 p.m. Maple's curbside lanes in both directions, Center Street to Branch Road SE; the two center lanes stay open, and business driveways stay open unless a side-street entrance is available 6:30 p.m. full closure
4:45 p.m. Lineup streets: Locust, Hine, Welles, Pine, Berry, Branch Road SE, Cabin Road, Branch Circle and Charles Street Between 8:30 and 9 p.m.
5 p.m. Center Street S from Maple to Elm Street SW; Locust Street from Center Street S to Cottage Street Center Street around 11 p.m.
6 p.m. Cherry Street SE from Center Street S to Park Street SE; Mill Street SE at Cherry Between 8:30 and 9 p.m.
6:30 p.m. All of Maple from Lawyers Road NW to East Street SE; Center Street N, Park Street NE, Glyndon Street NE and SE, and Beulah Road NE; business driveways on Maple between Center and Berry streets Around 11 p.m.

The 6:30 p.m. closure is wider than the parade itself. The route covers Branch Road to Center Street, but the full Maple shutdown runs from Lawyers Road NW to East Street SE. Anyone crossing town on Maple after dinner will hit the closure several blocks before reaching the floats. The Town's parade map shows the detours.

Why the Day Starts an Hour Earlier

Last year, Patch reported that single-lane closures on Maple would begin at 3 p.m. for the 79th parade, which had the theme "Broadway on Maple." The 2026 schedule moves that first Maple lane closure to 2 p.m.

The fence explains the change. In 2025, Patch described temporary metal fencing on both sides of Maple, from Branch Road to Center Street, as one of that year's changes for spectators. It returns for 2026. The Town says the fencing gives spectators more seating space and a closer view, and that "as a result of the temporary fencing extended road closures and new traffic patterns will be in place." Fence crews have to work while traffic is still moving, so the clock starts earlier.

The fence also changes what spectators can do once they arrive:

  • Separate temporary fencing protects the streetscape planters along Maple.
  • Spectators and chairs are not allowed in the street.
  • Accessible parking is on Church Street between Dominion Road and Park Street, in front of the Freeman Store and Museum and Vienna Presbyterian Church.

Since the street is off-limits, your spot is wherever you can reach the fence line. Families who used to arrive at 6:45 and stand at the curb will find the curb now sits behind a barrier.

How a Costumed Kid Gets From Sidewalk to Parade

The 2026 parade lets children march without signing up, which matters more than the theme for many households. The evening has a set order:

  1. 6 p.m. Children in costume and their parents meet at United Bank, 374 Maple Ave. E. Registration isn't required.
  2. 6:30 p.m. Maple closes completely to cars, half an hour before step-off.
  3. 7 p.m. The parade leaves Branch Road heading toward Center Street.
  4. 7:15 p.m. Free goodie bags go out at the Caffi Field Pitching Lanes on Cherry Street SE, between the Vienna Community Center and the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department.

The goodie bags come from local donors. The Town names 3D Printz 4 You, Capital Kids Dental, First Baptist Church, Flint Hill Elementary, Maple Ave Living, Mathnasium, Merrifield Orthodontics, PR Run & Walk, Rhea Lana's of Falls Church, Smoothie King, Somerset Trust Bank, Vienna Eyecare and Zia Performance + Physiotherapy. The giveaway happens at Caffi Field, not along the route. The Town's participant rules bar entries from throwing or handing out items, ban balloon releases and open flames, and say walkers may not touch spectators. Candy won't come over the fence, so Cherry Street is where kids collect.

Eating Before the 6:30 Cutoff

With Maple closed by 6:30 and kid marchers meeting at 6, dinner works best early and on foot. Two spots near the route have confirmed hours. Taco Bamba at 164 Maple Ave. W. lists daily hours of 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Caffè Amouri at 107 Church St. NE lists weekday hours of 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., good for a hot drink before you claim a spot on the fence. Evelyn Rose at 111 Church St. NW posts a full dinner menu on its site. Call ahead for its hours on a Wednesday.

Taco Bamba sits on the west side of Center Street, so walking there and back is easy. Driving in from the east side of town after 6:30 means working around the closures in the table above.

The Theme and the Marshal

The theme for 2026 is "Haunted History: 250 Years of America." The Town suggested entries draw on historical figures, haunted landmarks, Americana through the decades, and American legends and tall tales. Applications have closed, and entrants were due to hear back by Oct. 12.

Mark Keam is grand marshal, which the Town says honors his public service and advocacy for the greater Vienna area. Keam leads the Korean American Institute and served as a Virginia state lawmaker.

The judges score a wide range of entries. Categories include Youth Band, Adult Band, Float with Music, Float without Music, Youth Performers, Adult Performers, Elected Official or Political Candidates, Walking Group, Animal Entry and Antique Vehicles. Performing groups are capped at 75 people.

The Weeks Around Parade Night

Parade night falls inside a busy stretch of downtown Vienna events. Most happen within a few blocks of the route:

  • Friday, Oct. 16, through Sunday, Nov. 1. Vienna Theatre Company performs Joe DiPietro's comedy "An Old-Fashioned Family Murder" at the Vienna Community Center, 120 Cherry St. SE. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, 17, 23, 24 and 30, with 2 p.m. matinees on Oct. 18 and 25 and Nov. 1. Tickets are $16.
  • Saturday, Oct. 17, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Halloween on the Green at Vienna Town Green has crafts, games, a live animal show, and pumpkin decorating. Silver Diner of Tysons and Whole Body Health Chiropractic are the sponsors.
  • Saturday, Oct. 17, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Freeman Store's Used Book Cellar celebrates its 10th birthday with a free event, according to Historic Vienna, Inc.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m. The 80th Halloween Parade.
  • Thursday, Oct. 29, 7:30 p.m. Historic Vienna, Inc. holds its free fall membership meeting in the Vienna Town Hall Council Chambers. The program is "Sounds of the 70s," with a focus on 1976, the year the group was founded.

Oct. 17 puts the Town Green, the Freeman Store and a Vienna Theatre Company evening show within a few blocks on the same Saturday. Eleven days later, Maple shuts down for the parade.

At Sullivan Brownell Partners, we track Vienna's calendar as closely as its market, including when Maple closes and when it reopens. If you're thinking about what your home near the parade route is worth, request your home valuation and we'll prepare an analysis based on your block.
