West Falls Ends Its Movie Season Before Its Grocery Store Has a Building

Where do you eat a lobster roll from Mason's on a Thursday night in late October in the Little City? Tonight the answer is a blanket on the lawn at Commons Park. The West Falls developer's own event page invites you to "grab a bite from one of our nearby restaurants, then bring your meal to the park."

A year ago, the shorthand for West Falls was the grocery store coming to Haycock Road. That store hasn't opened, and its building doesn't exist yet. The district has become a place to spend an evening anyway, thanks to a public green, a cluster of counter-service kitchens and a calendar of free events that ends its movie season tonight.

Tonight's Finale, and the Two Nights After It

On its event page, West Falls describes Movie Nights as a free fall series, and the last showing is tonight: "Something wicked this way comes! The curtain is closing on West Falls Movie Nights."

That opening line starts three busy days for Falls Church:

  • Thursday, October 22, 7:30 p.m. Hocus Pocus in Commons Park, with free popcorn while it lasts.
  • Friday, October 23, 6 to 9 p.m. Live Music in Commons Park, the next date on the West Falls events calendar.
  • Saturday, October 24, 8 a.m. to noon. The year-round Falls Church Farmers Market in the City Hall parking lot at 300 Park Ave.
  • Saturday, October 24, 1 to 5:30 p.m. The City's Halloween Carnival at Cherry Hill Park, 312 Park Ave. It runs in two sessions, 1 to 3 p.m. and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

All four are free to walk into, and none of the three days needs a car. The weekend leans toward Park Avenue, but the two evenings belong to the lawn on the west end of the city. When the private developer opened that lawn, it was described as an 18,000-square-foot public green space at the center of the 10-acre project, according to Shopping Center Business. That's a big enough space for a screen, a crowd and a band, and West Falls has filled it most fall weekends: a live set on October 16 and an all-day college football watch party on October 17, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Best Buns Brings the Bar the Lawn Was Missing

Until this month, a night out at West Falls meant takeout eaten outdoors. That changed on October 1, when Best Buns Bakery & Burgers opened at 265 W. Falls Station Blvd. ARLnow reported that this is the Shirlington-based chain's first location with outdoor rooftop seating. The rooftop serves cocktails, wine and draft beer, and it sits above a grab-and-go counter selling pastries, coffee and sandwiches.

ARLnow's report puts the menu in context. The drinks list includes margaritas, mojitos, espresso martinis and a limoncello spritz, along with a pale ale, a lager and an IPA. Food covers fried chicken sandwiches on bread or buttermilk biscuits, cheeseburgers, and breakfast sandwiches served all day. It's the fourth Best Buns, after Springfield, Tysons and the original at 4010 Campbell Avenue in Shirlington, which opened in 1995. The Falls Church location was first announced in November 2025.

The hours matter more than the menu. Best Buns is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, so the same building handles a school-morning coffee and a Friday cocktail while the band plays below. The neighborhood connection is direct, too. Jon Norton, CEO of Great American Restaurants, told ARLnow he was looking forward "to be neighbors with Meridian High School, where my own high school basketball coach, Jim Smith, now coaches."

The Kitchens Around the Lawn

The movie-night invitation to bring food to the park depends on what's within a short walk of Commons Park. The West Falls business directory lists these restaurants and food counters without a "coming soon" label:

Business Address
Best Buns Bakery & Burgers 265 W. Falls Station Blvd
Mason's Famous Lobster Rolls 255 W. Falls Station Blvd
BurgerFi 168 W. Falls Station Blvd
Seoul Spice 156 W. Falls Station Blvd
Honoo Ramen Bar 153 W. Falls Station Blvd
Ice Cream Jubilee 151 W. Falls Station Blvd

Those six sit within about a hundred street numbers of one another on a single block. That's why the dinner-then-blanket routine works here. The lineup is mostly counter service, which suits a lawn better than it suits a reservation.

Other tenants bring people to the same block for other reasons. City Dance and Levine Music both have suites at 255 W. Falls Station Blvd, the same address as Mason's. Perspire Sauna Studio is at 7140 Leesburg Pike, and Home2 Suites by Hilton is at 171 W. Falls Station Blvd. The directory was last updated in April 2026, so check a business's own page before planning around it.

Parking for a Dinner-and-a-Movie Night

ARLnow called parking in West Falls "limited," so the logistics are worth sorting out before 7:30 tonight.

  1. Park in Garage A/D at 370 Mustang Alley if you're eating at Best Buns. The restaurant validates 90 minutes of free garage parking there. Bring your garage ticket inside with you.
  2. Plan for the clock. Ninety minutes covers dinner. Dinner plus a feature film on the lawn will likely run longer than the validation window.
  3. Know the posted Garage B rates. ABM, which operates West Falls Garage B on Cardinal Lane, lists $5 for up to one hour, $7 for one to two hours, $10 for two to three hours and $14 for three to twelve hours. The garage is open 24 hours. A three-hour evening there costs $10.
  4. Use street spaces only for pickups. Best Buns notes that free 15-minute street spaces are available, which is enough to grab an order and nothing more.

West Falls also sits next to the West Falls Church Metro, so for anyone near the Orange Line or within walking distance, the garage question goes away.

The Anchors Still Waiting on the Directory

The lawn and the restaurant block are working. The bigger names promised for West Falls are still in progress, and the biggest is the grocery.

The Fresh Market announced its Falls Church store in July 2024, and at the time the chain said it expected to open "within the next three years." FFXnow reported in May 2026 that the store will take about 29,000 square feet at 101 Haycock Road, on the ground floor of a future residential building. In that same report, a Fresh Market spokesperson had no update on a timeline. That month the chain also closed its Vienna store at 150 Branch Road SE, its first in Northern Virginia, which had opened in July 2011. The Alexandria location is staying open, so it's now the chain's only store in the region. The Falls Church store has no announced opening date.

Two smaller tenants that made news a year ago are also later than first expected:

  • Dok Khao, at 180 W. Falls Station Blvd, is chef Porntipa "Chef Pat" Pattanamekar's Thai restaurant, with home-style recipes inspired by her mother. ARLnow projected a winter 2025–26 opening when it covered the project in September 2025. The group already has locations in Columbia, Maryland, and Woodbridge.
  • Withered Fig, at 255 W. Falls Station Blvd, is an online menswear retailer founded in 2017 by Richard Lin and known for high-end Japanese denim. This will be its first physical store. Northern Virginia Magazine reported an early-2026 target in August 2025.

Both, along with La'Baik, IMAGE Studios at 7136 Leesburg Pike and Signature Orthodontics at 7141 Magnolia St, still carried "coming soon" labels in the directory's April 2026 update.

When those businesses do open, they'll join a district that already has a regular rhythm: live music on Fridays, a movie series that ran through the fall, and a rooftop bar that opened three weeks ago. Tonight's Hocus Pocus screening at 7:30 is the last chance this season to see the lawn used as a cinema.
